Back in 1967, Rodriguez was working in a car factory and pursuing music as a hobby. He often played in Detroit coffee houses and bars. Harry Balk, a local producer, saw him perform and was amazed by how talented he was!

With the help of producer Harry Balk, Sixto Rodriquez helped him record his first single, “I’ll Slip Away,” for Impact records in 1967. Balk insisted he changed his name to Rod Riguez.
