Tucker Carlson: Facts You Might Want To Know

Tucker Carlson’s Roots

It’s only natural that we start at the beginning. Just who is Tucker Carlson and how did he get to where he is today, those are some pretty important questions folks! Born in San Francisco, Carlson is the oldest of former L.A. news anchor Richard Warner Carlson. In fact, Richard was also the U.S. ambassador to the Seychelles AND was president of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and director of Voice of America. Could that explain where Tucker got his love for media? Possibly. We wonder just how proud Carlson’s parents are regarding their son’s status as a celebrity – a sometimes not so liked celebrity that is.

College Days

You would think that someone like Tucker Carlson would have a degree in journalism, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth! 1992 is when Carlson graduated from Trinity College with a B.A. in history of all things! Maybe it better helps to strategize his arguments when it comes to politics? Anything is plausible when it comes to Tucker Carlson.

Cause When You’re 15

During a Mother’s Day episode of Fox & Friends in 2014, Carlson and his wife Susan admitted that they have known one another since they were just 15! Yup, this duo met their first week of 10th grade at St. George’s. 1991 is when they tied the knot and currently have four children together. “We’ve been together 30 years, so it’s a little hard to imagine what it’s not like to be [together],” said Carlson.

The Start

Not surprisingly, while in college, Tucker began his journalism career. How so? He was a member of the Policy Review, a national conservative journal. Which is actually owned by the Hoover Institution now. Humble beginnings? Or the start of the Carlson we all know today?

Trust Me, I’m A Writer

What hasn’t Carlson reported about and which publication hasn’t he written for? We mean that in a good way, Carlson’s career is pretty darn amazing. He was a columnist for New York and Reader’s Digest – two highly respected publications that millions of people read daily. Moreover, he also wrote for Esquire, The Weekly Standard, The New Republic, The New York Times Magazine, and The Daily Beast. Looks like journalism is in Carlson’s blood.

Youngest Anchor Ever

We’re surprised Carlson doesn’t boast of this fact much, but did you know that when he joined CNN, he was its youngest anchor ever to do so? Now, that’s pretty impressive. While at CNN, he was appointed as the co-host of Crossfire, Carlson of course represented the political right. Moreover, he was the host of a weekly public affairs program on PBS called Tucker Carlson: Unfiltered.

Memorable Appearance

During his time on Crossfire, just about everyone remembers THAT highly memorable appearance in October 2004. The one just before the 2004 presidential election took place. Carlson and Jon Stewart (the host of The Daily Show at the time) got into a very heated exchange. Additionally, after their televised confrontation, Carlson revealed that Stewart actually stayed at CNN for hours after the show so they could continue to discuss the issues that had been raised on air. “It was heartfelt,” Carlson said, “He [Stewart] needed to do this.”

Aftermath

The following year though, CNN made the announcement that they were terminating their relationship with Carlson and Crossfire was about to be canceled. Shortly before Carlson was approached by Jonathan Klein, the CNN chief, to inform him of the decision, Carlson had already resigned from CNN months before. Long before his interview with Jon Stewart! Carlson told Patricia Duff, “I resigned from Crossfire in April, many months before Jon Stewart came on our show, because I didn’t like the partisanship, and I thought in some ways it was kind of a pointless conversation … each side coming out, you know, ‘Here’s my argument’, and no one listening to anyone else. [CNN] was a frustrating place to work.”

MSNBC’s Tucker

Shortly after leaving CNN, Turker Carlson’s new early evening show first premiered on MSNBC, Tucker. The show only lasted for three seasons before being canceled due to poor ratings. Brian Stelter, The New York Times reporter, said, “During Mr. Carlson’s tenure, MSNBC’s evening programming moved gradually to the left. His former time slots, 6 and 9 p.m., were then occupied by two liberals, Ed Schultz and Rachel Maddow.” Guess it was time for Carlson for move on?

Now, Brian Stelter may have had his own thoughts about Carlson and MSNBC but Tucker Carlson felt differently. Carlson spoke about his feelings toward MSNBC, saying that the network had changed a ton and “they didn’t have a role for me.” Just where would Carlson wind up after this? You guessed it. Fox News.

Although he was already a frequent guest panelist for some of their late-night satire shows like Red Eye w/ Greg Gutfeld and Special Report with Bret Baier. Moreover, Carlson was a substitute host for Hannity in Sean Hannity’s absence. This was just the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship, much to some people’s dismay.

On April 19, 2017, news broke that Tucker Carlson Tonight was taking the Fox News’ 8PM time slot following the cancellation of The O’Reilly Factor after sexual harassment allegations. Many people were up in arms though, feeling that Megyn Kelly deserved to take over the coveted 8PM time slot, and not Tucker Carlson. Various social media platforms imploded with messages of disgust with Fox News for not replacing O’Reilly with someone more experienced. Others felt that it was a disservice to female anchors, that a male anchor is fired for sexual harassment and is replaced by another outspoken male anchor.

No Chance Of Failure

Fox News have had many candidates who could have easily taken over for The O’Reilly Factor, however, they wanted someone familiar, someone in-house. They responded to allegations of favoritism by stating that Fox doesn’t believe in letting their “talent” fail. By choosing insiders over a high-profile outsider, Fox News instantly reduced the possibility that an anchor wouldn’t “take” with their loyal audience. So basically they replaced O’Reilly with Carlson because they knew it was a smart business decision. It didn’t matter what Fox News said though, people were still pissed. They didn’t accept that this was the reason for Carlson’s promotion.

Bow Ties

Now, this is just amazing, considering Carlson’s appearance now. Back in the day, Tucker Carlson was known for wearing bow ties! However it didn’t take long for him to stop doing so. In his own words, “If you wear a bow tie, it’s like [wearing] a middle finger around your neck; you’re just inviting scorn and ridicule…the number of people screaming the F-word at me…it wore me down after a while so I gave in and became conventional.” Just when we thought he wasn’t bothered by outside criticism.

Dancing with the Stars

Yeah, when news broke in 2006 that conservative Tucker Carlson was going to be a contestant on Dancing with the Stars, everyone, and I mean everyone, was stunned. Just why would he join the show? “I’m not defending it as the smartest choice, but I think it’s the most interesting. I think if you sat back and tried to plan my career, you might not choose this. But my only criterion is the interest level. I want to lead an interesting life.” I mean, fair enough but it is a bit crazy. Carlson also said, “I’m 37. I’ve got four kids. I have a steady job. I don’t do things that I’m not good at very often. I’m psyched to get to do that.” However, with that being said, he and his partner Elena Grinenko were the very first team to be eliminated.

Autobiography

Carlson’s autobiography, Politicians, Partisans and Parasites: My Adventures in Cable News, was released in 2003. The book follows his TV news experiences but what’s most interesting is that he reveals he was falsely accused of raping a woman he did not know. That she was someone suffering from mental illness and displayed stalker-like behavior. Moreover, he went on to say that the incident was emotionally traumatic.

Telling The Truth

After the false accusation of raping a woman, Carlson took to the air to express his feelings and views. One of the points he wanted to drive home was that not every single person who is accused of a crime is guilty, and not every accuser is telling the truth. “I learned this the hard way a number of years ago when I was accused of felony rape by a woman I literally had never seen.”

Do you know what I mean? I’m not against gay marriage, actually, and I’m the most right-wing person I know.” Carlson added, “I think, marriage has been a great thing for me, and I think it’s a really civilizing force, and I think it would be a civilizing force for gay people too.” Now, that’s a twist.

Russia

Yes, Tucker Carlson is allowed to have his own beliefs and he’s not afraid to vocalize them. When it comes to Russia, he doesn’t think that they’re a real threat to America. Carlson has said many times that America should work alongside Russia in the Syrian Civil War. Peter Beinart of The Atlantic has said that Carlson has been an “apologist for Donald Trump on the Russia scandal.” Surrounding the controversy of Donald Trump Jr. accepting anti-Clinton information from a Russian government official, Carlson said it was taking on a “new level of hysteria” and that Trump Jr. had only been “gossiping with foreigners.”

Public Opinion

The more Carlson speaks out on issues that are important to him, the more infuriated people grow. The New York Times James Poniewozik wrote once, “Mr. Carlson does not seek to interview his subjects but to defeat them…He shifts topics to imply hypocrisies…He prods, pounces, guffaws and interrupts…The camera holds tight on his face to show every squint of bemusement, contempt and confusion. (His default face is that of a bear puzzling out how to get at a beehive.) Climate Change

Yup, Tucker Carlson absolutely rejects the scientific consensus on climate change. Moreover, he’s not even sure whether human activities have contributed to climate change, as he claims it’s all “unknowable.” Looks like his views on climate change are in sync with the current President of the United States. Interesting times.

Criticized 2000 Presidential Candidate John McCain

Salon.com asked Carlson about his views on John McCain in 2000, to which he said, “I liked McCain. And I would have voted for McCain for president happily, not because I agree with his politics; I never took McCain’s politics seriously enough even to have strong feelings about them. I don’t think McCain has very strong politics. He’s interested in ideas almost as little as George W. Bush is. McCain isn’t intellectual, and doesn’t have a strong ideology at all. He’s wound up sort of as a liberal Republican because he’s mad at other Republicans, not because he’s a liberal.” OH.

Not A True Conservative

Turns out that Tucker Carlson believes that former U.S. President George W. Bush is “not a true conservative.” During a Washington Post interview in 2004, Carlson spoke of his “displeasure with Bush.” Carlson then asked, “Why do so many antiwar liberals give [John] Kerry a pass when he adopts the Bush view on Iraq, as he has? The amount of team-playing on the left depresses me.”

2004 Is A No

Speaking of the 2004 election, Carlson did not cast a vote that year. Why? Carlson was deeply disgusted with the Iraq War and the small-government Republican Party, saying, “I don’t know what you consider conservative, but I’m not much of a liberal, at least as the word is currently defined. For instance, I’m utterly opposed to abortion, which I think is horrible and cruel. I think affirmative action is wrong. I’d like to slow immigration pretty dramatically. I hate all nanny state regulations, such as seat belt laws and smoking bans. I’m not for big government. I think the U.S. ought to hesitate before intervening abroad. I think these are conservative impulses. So by my criteria, Bush isn’t much of a conservative.”

When it comes to a ban on Muslims, Tucker Carlson has said flipped the subject on its head. “A temporary ban on Muslim immigration? Millions of Muslims have moved to Western Europe over the past 50 years, and a sizable number of them still haven’t assimilated. Instead, they remain hostile and sometimes dangerous to the cultures that welcomed them. By any measure, that experiment has failed.
