Our story begins with a regular day for Juan de Dios Sota. He had a ranch that was located near Buenos Aires. The cows had been out grazing at the beginning of our story. Argentina had been going through a drought for a little while, but the animals seemed to be doing just fine. However, the current weather conditions made them hunt for water. This was how things got weird for the rancher!

Anyone who has ever been near a cow would know that they would do anything they could in order to look for water. They will go far and look until they can finally quench their thirst. When the situation is more severe, they will even stampede! Even though they were not doing that at the time, they did head off on their own. It turns out that they ended up going to a special place. No one knew this back then yet, however.

A couple of the cows started to walk off in search of water. They ended up going to the Vallimanca riverbeds since they are typically wet. However, the drought made them dry up and made the water levels lower. The riverbeds rested on the edge of Juan’s ranch, so he chased after the cows. There was something that made him stop in his tracks, however. He knew that he needed to look into it some more! After all, it looked like it was going to be a big problem for him.

Juan was familiar with every single patch of land on the ranch. He had been raising cows there for a long time already and assumed that he had seen everything there was to see. The drought, it turned out, would reveal new things together with the debris. As the animals walked around, Juan did not think that there was going to be any problem despite the strange object that he spotted. After all, it did not look all that different from the rest of the debris there. However, the next thing that happened shook his world.

As he led the animals away from the riverbed, Juan tripped on a big stone. It was the first time he had ever seen the river that low. There were even stones at the bottom starting to appear on the bed itself. After getting up, the rancher dusted his pants off and inspected the object. To himself, he thought that it was the weirdest stone he had ever seen in his life. This was what made him take a better look at it.

The thing in front of him looked like it was only the tip of a bigger object. On top of that, it had a weird pattern that he did not recognize. Soon enough, he figured out that this was no rock whatsoever. He decided to get in touch with the authorities. It looked like it might be something important. When he started to clear the surface, a shape started to form. The object was not only round but also very big. The rock had an interesting pattern, which you will see in the following slide. The entire thing was buried deep into the ground. The patterns would not have been there if it was a normal rock. On top of that, it was far too huge to be anything ordinary. It is high time that we took a closer look at this!

The rock he found on the ranch looked a lot like the one here. This photo comes from a similar discovery made in 2015. The rock was very similar to this one but even bigger. There was an odd honeycomb-like pattern on the surface. It did not look like the other rocks on his property. Let us keep in mind that he was familiar with every nook and cranny of the place, so stumbling into a new thing was a huge surprise.

After the police dropped by to check out what he found on the property, they were shocked. After all, they do not get any training to handle fossils. They would have been able to do something about it if it was old munition or something similar. In the end, they agreed with the rancher. It was clearly some sort of fossil. Even though they had no idea what it could be, they at least knew who could help out. The best team to help was just right up the road!

When they got in touch with the university, a team was assembled to help out. It was composed of paleontologists and archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeological and Paleontological Research of the Pampean Quaternary (INCUAPA). It is a scientific organization under the National University in Argentina. When they began to dig, they stumbled into an extraordinary discovery. It was the first time that they had ever seen anything like this.

A similar object was discovered in a different part of Argentina in 2015. It was around three feet long this time. Even though the one in the ranch had the same pattern, it had a different composition. On top of that, it was much bigger. Perhaps the most significant part of this would be the fact that there was more of it. The one from 2015 did not get examined by these experts, although Juan’s would be.

In late 2019, some fishermen discovered a similar rock lying at the bottom of a river. This was also in Argentina, although a different part of the country. It had the same pattern found on Juan’s, but it was a lot smaller than the shell. It was a little more than a fragment, but it was still examined by scientists. Thanks to the distinctive pattern on the shell, the scientists already had a lead about its origins. But what on earth could this fossil actually be?

The fossil discovered by the group of fishermen had a length of three feet. However, it bore a different shape than the one Juan found in his ranch. Scientists examined it and concluded. We can understand why you assumed that glyptodons were related to turtles or tortoises. However, the truth is that they are not. The one Juan found had unique features that fascinated scientists.

As the paleontologists and archaeologists started to dig, they found something interesting. They did not only find a single glyptodon shell but four of them! It was rather unusual because even though similar fossils had been discovered in the past, they were often single specimens. However, they found four of them together this time. On top of that, they were all of the different sizes as well. Could this be a family of glyptodons? This was not the only strange thing about these fossils…

Several other characteristics distinguished these fossils from the rest. They all seemed to face the same direction, to the west. It probably meant that they died at the same time. Thanks to their proximity, there was a good chance that they were either a hunting group or a family. It was rare to find these animals in a single group. This was such a rare find, so they needed to conduct more tests.

The team still needed to run more tests on these fossils to arrive at more conclusive results. They tested them and removed the bone fragments from these fossils. Among other things, they had to figure out which genus the glyptodons came from. Even though scientists once thought that there were plenty of those, they now believe that only two types ever existed. But what happened to these animals anyway?

The archaeologist said, “The presence of these four animals that apparently died together, will allow, for the first time, to make a detailed study of certain aspects not yet evaluated.” They tested the DNA to see if they had been on the right track with their hypotheses. What was next for them?

The shells each weighed about 1000 lbs. They are huge and need to be handled with special care. Of course, the researchers were thrilled. Ricardo Bonini, a field paleontologist, said, “These types of cases, in which several individuals appear together who died in the same circumstances, are truly exceptional and will undoubtedly give us a lot of information about these enigmatic animals and will allow us to test various hypotheses that we have been handling in recent years.” But what were they looking for?

There were four fossils found, so it was generally assumed that they made up a family. The testing would be very interesting if this assumption is true. Scientists never discovered a family of these creatures before this, so it would make for more discoveries. This would have made it possible to find a new species of glyptodons. You should know that one of the largest mysteries that surround these creatures would be their sex and age. In the past, no one had been able to figure out if they were dealing with a male, female, or both. An archaeologist from INCUAPA by the name of Pablo Messineo said, “(These fossils) will allow us, among other things, to see if there was sexual dimorphism (that is, differences between males and females) and the differences between adult and juvenile individuals.” This sure sounds like a lot of information to uncover from a single find, so we are sure that they were excited to find out. Where did the fossils go?

At the moment of writing, the fossils have since been taken out from the original site where they were found. Right now, they are resting in a special paleontology room located in Cine Avenida. They plan to let the general public look at the fossils after they are done extracting all the necessary information. It is a huge find, metaphorically and literally.
