Glyptodons might have been herbivores, but they boasted a huge armor and big claws. At their size, it probably meant that they needed to fight off big apex predators. Even though the ice age did a number on their population, they were unable to fend off humans. You see, early humans ended up hunting them into extinction. As a matter of fact, these creatures might have been the first animal that went extinct thanks to our forebears. But why were they hunted?

The Shells

You see, glyptodons were useful to humanity for a couple of reasons. Firstly, they had very hard and huge shells. This was the reason humans hunted them down to make a shelter. Many people assume that humans back then lived in caves. However, keep in mind that there are not a lot of caves out there but a glyptodon shell was big enough to fit 2 to 3 people inside. There was one more reason they were hunted by humans as well.
